Tutorial
for
Buddy in his Tow Truck
Roll out red clay to about 1/3 of an inch thick.  This is the base of
your ornament and you do not want it to be too thin.
Cut out the shape with a needle tool, exacto knife, knitting needle,
or anything with a point.
Make an indentation for the
tires.  You can use your finger. I
used the end of my needle tool.
Roll 2 balls of black clay and
attach for the tires.
Roll 2 balls of gold clay and press
into the middle of the tires. These
are the rims and you can embellish
them in any way you wish. I
slightly pressed the end of my
needle tool into the center of the
gold clay.
Roll a log of gold clay and flatten
it onto the truck as shown. Roll a
silver snake and attach as shown.
I used Super Sculpey
for the dog biscuit.
You can cut it out with
a cookie cutter or
shape it by hand.
Press it on as shown
and fold the silver
snake over it to look
like a hook.
Roll  a log of white clay and
attach it to the bottom of the
truck to make it look like he is
driving in snow. I also attached
a piece of white clay to the front
of the truck.
I shaped the dog's
head and put it the
window. i also put a
small black log to
represent the steering
wheel.
Here I have squeezed green clay
through a garlic press and attached
it as shown.  Make a white snake and
a red snake, press them together and
twist for the candy cane garland.
Add red balls. I also gave Buddy a
red tongue.
Using a cookie
cutter,cut a star from
yellow clay
and attach.

Add 4 small leaves
and berries as shown.

Roll 2 white balls of
clay for the eyes and
attach 2 smaller black
balls of clay on top.
Add a red ball of clay
for the nose. Add a
hook and your
ornament is ready to
bake following the
instructions for the
clay you used.
Buddy is all baked and painted and ready to hang on the tree!

Many of the ornaments I make every year are special orders from customers or
special ornaments I make for family members.  I would like to take you through
the process of creating one of these ornaments.

My brother owns a towing service and his dog, Buddy, goes everywhere with
him, so I decided that Buddy needed his own Christmas ornament.

Making an ornament for a family member is much easier than creating one for
someone you do not know. If it is an order from a stranger, get as much
information as possible: first name, hair color, hobbies, pets, favorite color,
occupation, etc. Ask your customer if there is anything specific that they would
like included on the ornament. When you have an idea of what you want on the
ornament, make a rough sketch to guide you. You may even want to make a
practice ornament from Super Sculpey .  Don't bake it so that you can tweak it
and re-use the clay.  Decide on your colors and you are ready to go.
